Dore mi fa sol la ti do originated in Italy in the 1600s or thereabouts, as did a lot of other musical terms and methods. The way my guitar teacher taught it, the *notes *are "do, re, mi", while the *chords *are "C, D, E". I think that's pretty standard in many places outside the United States.
